From ESPN.com:

Quote:
Steve Yzerman spent his entire career trying to avoid the spotlight.

Even when the Detroit Red Wings retired his No. 19 jersey Tuesday night, he deflected credit during a ceremony at Joe Louis Arena.

Yzerman praised his family, the franchise's front office, former coach Scotty Bowman and former teammates. Then, the usually stoic Yzerman got emotional when he addressed his adoring fans.

Although I've always been a Penguins fan, I have to say that I love Stevie Y. I'm glad his number was retired. He deserved it because he was just great for the game of hockey. Congrats Stevie Y!

Stevie Y deserved this honour more than anyone I can think of. The next step for him is his induction to the hall of fame. I'm pretty sure that that will happen his first year of eligibility. He is no doubt one of the greatest leaders in sports history. Also, he is one of the most classy and modest players in the history of the game, as we saw when he got his number retired. He wouldn't accept any compliments, that any of the people there said about him. He even said that his leadership was greatly overrated, which is not true at all.

Never seen a hockey player with more passion for the game. It's only deserving that he gets it retired.

He was an obvious choice for jersey retirement. So long #19!
