From theAP:

Quote:
[Xaiver] Nady and [Damaso] Marte were coveted by several teams, and New York parted with top outfield prospect Jose Tabata and three other minor leaguers to complete the deal one day after team executives met at the club's facility in Tampa, Fla.

In addition to Tabata, the Pirates acquired right-handers Ross Ohlendorf and George Kontos, and left-hander Phil Coke.

I'm content with the deal. Nady is having a career year, far above his averages, so I think the Pirates are probably selling high, but Marte has an option for next season and has been very consistent throughout his career. We gave up a couple of guys with value, but we didn't break the prospect bank, so to speak, and it takes some talent to get some talent.

Good deal for both teams. Yanks needed a righthanded bat and a lefty reliever, and the Pirates get some good young prospects in return. The Yankees have had enough with Jose Tabata's off-field antics, but he does have some upside. Ohlendorf has good stuff, but the Yankees aren't really the best fit for him.

The trade was actually adjusted so that, instead of Phil Coke and George Kontos, the Pirates are getting pitchers Daniel McCutchen and Phil Karstens. The majority of opinions I've been reading suggest that this sweetens the pot for the Pirates a little bit, but I still feel the same as above.

Nady is having a career year, but will the numbers stay up next year? We have seen deals like this before, and it is a good fix now, but what about next year?

Maybe not, but it's not like the numbers he nomally puts up are really that bad, either. Besides, Hideki Matsui should be back for next year and they got Nady for basically nothing anyway.
