There are several of those great hitters from that late 70's to mid 90's era to look at.
Boggs and Gwyn are 2 no question
Brett, Schmitt, Yoint, Puckett, Winfield, etc.
This just came to mind the one guy who has the rep from the fans that Ted and Joe did and could well carry the game for many years.
Mark McGwire. your thoughts. |

Mark is an intersting suggestion. Afterall, he is more than partially responsible for bringing the fans back to the game after the '94 strike. He is a player who I feel was very underrated for much of his career, and even while be underrated, put up some huge numbers consistently throughout his career (only once hitting less than 30 homers in a full season). He is obviously a fan favorite, a media favorite, and just an all-around good guy.
I cant actually come up with a valid argument against him except that he does not have a "vintage" feel to him. By that, I mean, he only played 15 years and just retired last season. At the present time he does not feel like he has enough baseball history in him to figurehead the game. In 10 years I think he would be an excellent choice as the baseball representative, but presently, Im not sure. _________________ Justin Lieber |

I agree 100% with everything you said about Big Mac.
those seasons arrond 92-95 when he missed somany games. If he would have had avg. years then he would be ahead of Mays. He was my personal fav. player. I fist say him in the 84 olymics on tv. Then after that monster rookie year in Oakland when he hit 49 HR's I have always been a fan.
I do think he could be that person who saves baseball one day however like you said he needs to get some dust on him first. Man I wish he was stilll playing. |

Yeah, he was fun to watch. I am so disapointed that Bonds took the record away from him. For someone like Bonds to take a highly touted record away from someone of such high class as McGwire is really just a slap in the face.
I wish I could say I have been watching him his whole career but I was not even a toddler when he starting playing the game. I do vaguely remember his Bash Brother days in Oakland with Canseco, that was always a lot of fun.
And you were right on about catching Mays. Just a couple average years from him (you know, 40 homers ) and third place all time is his. _________________ Justin Lieber |

In regards to Rickey Henderson that I mentioned earlier, here is an interesting stat that I just read:
Did You Know? Rickey Henderson is the all-time stolen base leader for two different franchises. And Im not talking a couple recent franchises that have only been around 30 years. He is the all-time stolen base leader for both the A's AND the Yankees. The Yankees! They've been around since forever. Amazing!
He is also 10th on the Padres all-time list (in just 2.5 seasons)
He had the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 8th and 9th highest single seasons in A's history
He had the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd highest single seasons in Yankes history
He had the 10th highest single season in Mets history
He had 100+ SB 3 times in his career, more than a third of the total times it has been accomplished since 1900.
He has the highest single season total (130) since 1887, 12 more than the closest competitor.
Is that amazing or what? _________________ Justin Lieber |

a nut case?
haha, Rickey's great.
I remember a story Tony Gwynn told. Tony was playing some exhibition game back in the early 80s while he was still in the minors and Rickey was in it. And in Rickey's first at-bat he hit some 90-95 MPH fastball for a homerun and Tony was in awe. Later on Tony told Rickey about that and Rickey's respone was simply: "Yeah, Rickey used-ta could-do that." hehe _________________ Justin Lieber |
