So do you guys think we'll have a Baseball strike this coming Winter?
Baseball doesn't have a lot of problems. But they have some. I heard that FOX lost over $700 million on last year's World Series, after it being the lowest rated World Series in history. I wonder if they're re-thinking giving all that money to Baseball for the exclusive rights to broadcast Major League Baseball for the next 5 years.
You know the network still pays the Baseball owners money regardless of whether or not they televise games. So probably the owners will just sit there and be content to let the season go to waste. I have a bad feeling the whole 2002 Baseball season could be cancelled. Because unlike what happened with the N.B.A. owners locking their players out at the beginning the 1999 season until the N.B.A. players gave in, Major League Baseball has a much tougher players' union.
And the main thing that will probably be talked about is how about the salaries that keep on going up and up? You know Texas is in the cellar in the American League West and all that money they gave to Alex Rodriguez could have instead gone to 4 players (preferably 4 pitchers) each making $8 million a year. Imagine if Rickey Henderson was in his prime with the salaries of today. Every Winter, he'd be trying to get his contract re-negotiated every day whenever another player gets a new contract setting a new standard.

I hope not. I wish they could just be content with less money. You don't need that much for the long.

im still bitter from the last strike cause last time there was a strike, tony gwynn had a shot at .400 before the season was canceled. so now if a player ever does hit .400 again, i will personally have to put an asterisk by it in my mind
...so i sure hope there isnt another strike, i dont know how well the MLB will survive after the strike, if one should take place
...and regarding the salaries, baseball needs a salary cap, i dont know how they havent implemented one yet |

You have to remember the track record of a lot of the big-money guys:
Pay-Rod: $252 milllion later, Texas is still floundering.
Ken Griffey Jr.: Paid millions to sit around and watch while recuperating from injuries.
Kevin Brown: I don't see the Dodgers in the World Series yet.
Just a few. And look at the Mariners, after getting rid of Griffey and Pay-Rod: Best record in baseball.
Pretty amazing...

About Ken Griffey, Jr. to his credit, the Mariners couldn't afford him but he did take less money to sign with the Reds so he could be closer to home than he could have if he signed elsewhere.

And don't forget the Mariners also lost Randy Johnson (they were pretty much forced to trade him at the end of the 1998 trading deadline) because they didn't think they could pay him want he wanted either at the end of his contract with Seattle. |
