I hate to admit that I have been around long enough on this earth to have heard and enjoyed virtually all of the memorable announcers and calls that have been part of the sports scene roughly beginning with the famous Russ Hodges' call of Bobby Thompson's "shot heard round the world" which sent the 1951 New York Giants to the World Series. That was my first introduction to a genre of sportscaster commonly labeled a "homer." Most major league baseball teams these days, such as the Chicago White Sox, employ announcers who will favor the home team with their calls. It is a very different type of fan presentation than the supposedly dispassionate style employed by announcers such as Al Michaels and John Madden. However, until my son became a student at the University of Georgia from which he graduated in 2002, I had never enountered hearing a Larry Munson broadcast. He is a true American gem. I now do what so many others have done and still do. I watch Georgia football on T.V. with the sound turned down so that Larry can describe the game for me. In fact, as the result of a Christmas gift in the recent past, I am the proud owner of one of Munson's C.D.'s full of notable calls. Go Bulldogs football, and go Larry Munson. _________________ Thots N Ramblins Blog |
