If it's only the player's on the list above I have to go with Ben Wallace, but I don't think he's the best defensive player in the NBA. Shaq and Payton especially were awesome defenders in their day, but both are mid to late 30s and their D has diminished greatly. As far as Big Ben, he has plenty of SportCenter moments, but his defense is highlighted by the fact that he has almost no offensive game.

As far as best defensive player in the NBA, I have to go with Tim Duncan, Bruce Bowen, Ron Artest, or Kevin Garnett.

My favorite is Duncan. He doesn't make the highlight reel defensively or offensively, but I believe he has been the best all around player in the NBA for the past 6 yrs.

I'd have to go with Ron Artest, hes an experienced player as well as a very good defensive player.

I agree with Dantheman223. Ron Artest in an all around defender and as much as Shaq or Wallace is a worry to teams... Artest is the type of player to get into your head... not to mention he's a great stealer and rebounder... also he can score when needed.

Ben Wallace. It's funny. He remains top in my book even after 5 years. He's just absolutely consistant. ron Artest is a great defender, too, but Ben edges him out in my book.

Ben Wallace is probably the best defensive player in the league, due to the #'s he puts up on defensive. However, a case could be made for Bruce Bowen . Bruce is the best man defensive player in the game, look at the players he has to guard and the job he does on them, it might not show up on his stats but without him the spurs would surely not be the same.

Even though I like Bowen, i'm gonna have to hop on the Ben Wallace Train.

Gerald Wallace! He averaged 2 bpg and 2 spg last season and had the highest steals per game stat..He was the only player in the NBA to have 2 BPG and 2 SPG..That's all around D
