Having this argument with a friend. I think PURE hitter Ichiro is better than Pujols. Pujols definitely has more power. But Ichiro can do things with a bat that I've never seen any other player do, EVER.
If you had to start a team who would you take Ichiro or Pujols ?
Just one more point, Ichiro MAY also have a better all around game (defense, base running )
It's a very even match, but my friend thinks Pujols blows him out of the water. What do you think ?

Welcome aboard, landaus60. Glad to have you. Nice question.

I would say that Ichiro might be a better contact hitter, but really it's kind of a push. Ichiro is a career .333 hitter and Pujols is a career .334. Ichiro is certainly faster and a better fielder at his position than Pujols is at his.

If I could pick one now, it'd be Pujols because he's younger. If I could pick one at the start of their career, I'd still go with Pujols. His OPS is 1.055. You just can't overlook his run production.

Thanks,

Patrick

Pujols also has the higher batting average and he cant get a hit by beating out a routine grounder to short.

I'd have to go with Pujols.

If it were the Bottom of the 9th and you had your choice of who you had to face, Pujols or Ichiro, chances are you'd choose Ichiro.

Whereas if you had to choose between Ryan Howard or Ichiro, I'd rather face Howard because of the chance of striking out.

Not only is Pujols scary strong, but he will put the ball in play.

Getting a hit by beating out a grounder isn't a bad thing. It's not any less of a hit. It just means that Ichiro can turn balls that would be outs for Pujols into base hits for himself. It's a strength. Just like Pujols being able to hit more home runs is a strength. Both have value.

Personally im going with Ichiro, sure his average is a point lower, but considering hes played a few seasons longer thats not bad. Also you know exactly what you will get every single year, its no surprise with him.

The same could be said for Pujols, though. Including his rookie year, he's never hit below .314 and has never hit less than 32 home runs with 103 RBI.

I'll take Pujols. He could win a game for you with his power, but Ichiro will rarely win you a game with just beating out a grounder or stealing a base. But ya couldn't really go wrong either way.

I would take Ichiro because he can steal a base when you need him and forces the defense into errors with his speed. He is also a great defender and good contact hitter.
