TSN always makes an annual list of the best sports cities. This year, Boston took the title. I have to agree with it, personally. Heres the top few cities:

1. Boston
2. Oakland-San Francisco-San Jose
3. New York-Long Island-New Jersey
4. Detriot
5. Philly
6. LA-Anaheim
7. Baltimore-Washington
8. Dallas-Fort Worth
9. Phoenix
10. Miami-Fort Lauderdale

San Diego is at 28 for those of you who care

Last years #1: New York
2000's #1, St. Louis, is now at 13
1999's #1: New York

The Least Best city (#301): Pine Bluff, Arkansas (their Division I men's basketball team, in the SWAC, went 2-26).
Last years Least Best city, Montreal, is now #37

Heres what they use to determine the rankings:

After minimum qualifications are met, the rankings are based on the previous 12 months, with heavy criteria on regular season won-loss records. Also in the rankings: postseason births/championships; power ratings; fan fervor (measured by attendence amongst other things); sports atmosphere/fan knowledgeability; abundance of teams; stadium quality; ticket prices; franchise ownership; marquee appeal of athletes; quality of competition. How they turn that into a number I do not know, but ties are broken by activities such as fishing, hunting, hiking, golfing, cycling, and boating.

What's Detroit got going for them other than the Red Wings? The Tigers and Lions are horrible.

Well, in that case, what's Boston got going for them? They haven't won a World Series in 80 years, an NBA Championship since the 80s or a Stanley Cup since... who knows (I am not up to speed on Bruins history).

It's hard to believe, but attendance to Lions and Pistons games are strong. Maybe not so much a loyal fanbase to the Pistons, but the Lions have blue-collar football fans that pay lots of money to see them screw up games. It's kinda wierd to be there during a game. You have the tailgaters in the parking lot grilling brats and having a beer in the crisp fall weather. They have their old Barry Sanders jerseys on and are talking about how things are going at the Big 3 autoplants or whatever. Eventually the mood swings toward what the Lions need to do to win a damn game. The entrances start to fill up and the beer stands are full with people who need just that much more beer to tolerate what could be a very long afternoon of football. A quick look around at the fans reveals anticipation of the kickoff and the loud roar that played over the loudspeakers. Most people already have their hot dogs and beer gone so that, if by chance, they will be able to stand up and yell "GO! RUN!" without pouring the precious liquid over the poor sap in front of them. As the game progresses, the fans are * at the team and at themselves in advance because exiting the parking lot is worse than passing a kidney stone. Yea, the Lions might be down during most of the game, but the atmosphere within the stadium is still hopeful. They bring their friends or kids there to kill a few hours and spend money that would probably be better invested in the car that still needs a front end alignment beacause of all the potholes in the roads. But they need a few hours away from life in order to release a little frustration and at the same time cheer a team that has it's moments, as if they will someday get back to the days of Bobby Lane. The leaves are turning colors and the smell of football is in the air and thats all that matters this time of year. I too, wonder why I still follow the Lions. They have wasted three hours of my life for 16 Sundays for the past 20 years and I still have the desire to catch a game down there every year. Call us Lions fans stupid, but deep down we would cheer no other team, ever. We had the misfortune of growing up with the Lions, and we will likewise die watching the Lions (a stroke or heart attack). Maybe it's a Mid-West, blue collar, beer drinkin thing, but all I know is that even if we lose a game by 30 points....we can't wait for next week. Maybe thats why Detroit is a great sports city. We don't need the new stadiums. We just need to see our guys play. Win or lose.

Wow, sorry for the long boring babble. I'm kinda in a coffee induced dejavu thing remembering how good it is to be alive during the kickoff of the first game of a season. I'm sure you football fans know the feeling. It's like no other.

Hey ZR, nice piece. I can understand and no one will ever hold being a true fan against you. I know I've been a Yankee and Dolphin fan since I was born and plan to be forever.

(No one said Lion fans were stupid by the way. )

Thanks for sharing. That was a nice read.

Pat, Boston had the Pats win the Super bowl for them last year. Doesn't that count for something? Plus they cheer for the Red Sox every year even though they know the Yankees will come out on top. And the Bruins actually are pretty good.
