ESPN.com had a little debate over what was the worst free agent pitching contract in history. What do you think?

I'll go with Zito, just because his career already seemed to be in decline when he got that contract, and the Giants are a rebuilding team that doesn't really have a need for a high-salary pitcher like that.

I would go with Zito at this point. The arguement, however, makes it close. I think that Zito had the higher expectations, and has disappointed the most.

Reading up on Hampton, though, it shows that there is a serious problem with baseball contracts. For the rest of who live in real-worldville, if we don't perform, we don't get paid.

I will vote for zito as well, but not for his lack of performance, but because of sanfransico's bad decision making. They keep locking themselves into log term deals and they say they want to go with a youth movement. A.k.s Barry bonds they just get done with that and now in a few years if your not hearing it already, can't wait till we get rid of the Zito contract.

I don't think you can count Pavano as much because he has been injured, so we really don't know how he would pitch if he was out there. It was only bad in the sense that he didn't play. Plus, he wasn't paid as much as these two guys were. He was being paid to be a # 3 starter not a # 1.

I think if Zito continues down this stretch then he will be the worst because he is actually healthy and still can't pitch.

Right now I say it's still Hampton until we see how Zito pitches for the next few years.

I'd agree that Pavano has gotta be up there as well, but to a lesser degree because his contract is worth roughly a third of what Hampton and Zito are getting paid. He is an even bigger dud than the other two though based strictly on performance.

I'm sure there are even worse signings than that. Between Zito and Hampton who were mentioned in the article though, I picked Zito.

You say that you can't count Pavano, because he has been injured, when that is the one of the very reasons that Hampton is on the list. One of the big points made in the article was the amount of time has spent on the DL. Since Pavano doesn't make near as much, he won't receive as much flak. However, the point holds for both pitchers.

Pavano's up there somewhere, but he's not at the top because, like Seamus said, his deal was only for 4 years and just under $40 million. Zito's is 7 years, $126 million.
