Hediki Irabu, that guy was supposed to be the japense nolan ryan and he got a big contract. I can't agree with zito, he won a cy young and had some really productive years in Oakland, SF are the maniacs that over paid him. Pavano was a big big time bust, the Yanks just pulled the trigger way to earrly in signing him, I dont know if he was really ever that good.......... _________________ The Nutmegger

| I'm not sure how big Irabu's contract was, though. He was originally signed by the Padres and his contract had to be small enough for the Yankees to eventually trade him to the cash-strapped Expos. |

The definition of "worst" in this case, is how he performed. I mean, when we signed Pavano, there were other teams willing to pay him that and more, if I recall. But, we're the ones who got him, so he's our bust. Hindsight is always 20/20, though.
Irabu didn't work out that badly. Going from these two pages:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hideki_Irabu
http://www.baseball-reference.com/i/irabuhi01.shtml
We traded Rafael Medina, Ruben Rivera and $3 million for Homer Bush, Gordon Amerson, Vernon Maxwell and the rights to Irabu. Bush actually turned out to have a better career than both Medina and Rivera.
We signed Irabu to a four year, $12.8 million dollar deal. He actually had a decent year in 1998 and a less decent, though not terrible year in 1999. And then we traded him after the 1999 season to the Expos for Jake Westrbook, Ted Lilly and Christian Parker. Westbook and Lilly both have had productive careers and are still pitching.
Westbrook got traded with Zach Day and Ricky Ledee for David Justice, who ended up playing a solid role in the 2000 World Series run and was later traded for Robin Ventura, who was traded for Bubba Crosby and Scott Proctor, who was traded for Wilson Betemit, who is on the Yankees now.
Lilly was packaged with Jason Arnold and John-Ford Griffin to get Jeff Weaver, who was packaged with Brandon Weeden, Yhency Brazoban and cash to get Kevin Brown. _________________ Patrick O'Keefe - SportsForums.net Administrator

Yeah, Zito's contract is worth some small countries GNP. _________________ www.chiefswarpath.com |
