I would say it is still a little early but overall, the Mariners did better, right now. We'll see. Thats how it always is when a star is traded.

I personally feel Cameron is a good player who has had a couple good years, not a star - yet. Antonio Perez is a very good prospect. Ben Davis is a highly touted catcher (right Defska? lol).

Griffey is Griffey. If he gets healthy and plays for 7 more years or so and plays well. I would never doubt Griffey's ability to do something like that.

Man Pat! I just read the article, copied the link, and was ready to post on it You beat me to it

Looking at the deal right now, The M's shockingly got the better end of this deal. Cameron has been solid and has potential, Ben Davis is definitely going to be big some day. The Mariners should be happy that they got out of a horrible situation with such an advantage.

The Reds dropped the ball. Money does win championships. Regardless of what people say, it does, when used correctly. Last years World Series teams, the Yankees and DBacks are #1 and #4 on payroll...and it's no coincidence.

The Reds realized this trend and set out to spend some money. But what they did, was take more than a quarter of their payroll and dump it on one player (of the Reds $45M payroll, Griffey takes home $12.5M). I don't care if that player is Barry Bonds or Babe Ruth, you aren't gonna win any games if 1/4 of your team is one player.

What the Reds need to do is trade Griffey. Some other team will be dumb enough to dump all their money on an ex-prospect and ex-candidate to reach Hank Aaron (see Los Angeles and Kevin Brown, or Texas and A-Rod). Griffey is washed up, and the Reds are paying too much for him. Trade Griffey, and the Reds can sign at least one stud pitcher and another solid one. With Griffey on their roster, the Reds are goin nowhere.

Well, if he "plays well" of course you can't doubt his abilities...but will he ever play well again? Coming into this season, I was willing to give him the benifit of the doubt. But, he injured himself again on a play that most would agree was not exactly a dangerous or strenuous play (he rounded third base). The guy is injury prone. As injury prone as anyone could possibly get. And when he is playing, he isnt as productive as he once was. 1994, 111 games, 40 HR. 2001, 111 ganes, 22 HR. Obviously the situations were different and he did get slightly fewer at-bats in 2001 than 1994, but to cut his HR total in half is a huge difference.

Maybe I am alone on this, but I think the best of Griffey's career is unfortunately behind him. As the article said, the great thing about baseball is you never know what to expect. So noone can really be sure about any of this.

Griffey needs a good year or else I'd say he's washed up.

If I was a GM and the Reds were trading Griffey, I'd trade for him.

Justin, I'd be suprised if the Reds could sign one "stud" (hate that word lol) pitcher with 12.5 mil these days. I mean, Darren Dreifort makes about that.

Thats not true...Griffey's salary was 4th in the NL last year

Driefort, last year, made $9.4M hehe

But...Randy Johnson makes $13.35, Maddux $12.5, Pedro $13, Clemens $10.3

Granted those are last years numbers, but with $12.5M I think the Reds could do a lot.

Defska,

For one, you are going on old contracts. You said they they could sign - meaning sign now, not years ago. And also, where did you get those figures?

I believe Clemens contract is paying him in the neighborhood of 5 million more than that per season.

Would you want the Yanks to dish Nick Johnson to get him though? I know I wouldnt want to lose Burroughs for Griffey.
