I, myself, don't equate only Super Bowls or World Series' with greatness. Greatness is more than that to me.

Greatness is being a leader, greatness is being able to make a team a whole lot better, greatness is being able to takeover a game.

Dan Marino was great in my opinion while Jim Kelly should not be mentioned in the same sentence, again my opinion. Marino, then Elway are the greatest QBs from that year. Then Kelly.

Mickelson great? I'm not so sure. Winning a major or not, doesn't really make you great in my eyes. But it is tough to be great without winning one in my eyes.

Anyway, please post your opinions of greatness, again your opinions and not rebuttals to my opinion.

Oh and I do not consider... Tom Brady "great" - yet or Trent Dilfer for that matter.

Trent Dilfer rules..

Or maybe that was Trent Klat..

In my mind, great is a combination of things. Personal achievements along with contributions to teams and personality. For example, nobody would ever consider John Rocker "great".. At least I hope not.

sounds like you are talking to me pat...im not sure how you expect conversations without, well, conversation. but if thats what you want...

---------------------

"great" is a term loosely used, and with no real definitive deep meaning like this article is trying to put across.

i look at L.T. and think, he is a great running back. maybe its because of what he has done for my team and will do in the future, or maybe its because he is honestly one of the best running backs ive had the privalage of watching play. for that, to me, he is "great".

but has he crossed the threshold of, say, Dan Marino, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Babe Ruth...??? absolutely not. but crossing that threshold is not necesarily "greatness," its more "sports immortality".

in the sports world, these players are legends that will never die. people will be talking about michael jordan in 80 years the way we talk about babe ruth today.

michael jordan was a "great" player when he was drafted as early in the draft as he was with as high expectations as he was drafted with, but he wasnt immortal, yet.

immortality must be earned, greatness is handed out.

Yes, that is exactly what I want Justin. I think we all just need to state our own individual opinions and not attack others, if you can't do it respectfully and nicely it creates a negative enviroment overall and not what I want. (In addition, please do not respond to this message. )

Well, Emmitt is okay and Barry is... weird. I don't feel sorry for Barry because thats life.

Emmitt got two... three? Super Bowls, so its not that bad. Barry just wanted to quit rather than hang around and his Dad was nuts. Nothing wrong with getting Payton's record. If he just wanted to retire because he was done, playing - fine. But if it is for any of the other stuff then I don't consider it to be honorable or anything.
