Each year, TSN picks one athlete to be their "Good Guy of the Year" and they also recognize some other notables. This year they selected, the often hated and criticized start shortshop of the Yankees, Derek Jeter.

Pretty cool article, unless someone finds a way to ruin it.

I was going to post on this article but I didnt feel it was worth it. Who can honestly say that one man's cause is more worthy than the next?

This is nothing against Jeter, cause I respect and admire him for everything that he does off the field, but I do not agree with praising his foundation as better than one of another man, or athlete.

I would argue this same arguement if Junior Seau or Tony Gwynn was ranked as "Good Guy of the Year," I just feel that TSN came up with a horrible idea for an annual list.

Well, Defska, I disagree with you.

The article that I linked to is a good thing because it puts a positive spin on sports, focusing on an athlete who does a large amount of charity work. With all of the negative things in sports and especially baseball, an article like this is only a good thing - and not something to argue about.

Thanks.

Jeter? Well, perhaps he is doing good for the community. That's nice to see. I personally don't see what makes him so great a ball player, but at least he is giving back a little. I am disappointed in the Sporting News not listing Darren McCarty in the list of good guys. I don't want to sound like I'm bragging up the Wings either. Darren isn't a superstar, but he shows his work ethic in everything he does. That's why Detroit fans love him. At least NHL.com recognizes that.

I myself don't see a point in arguing of players. Lots of players do great things, but don't get recognition. It isn't important to me that Jeter didn't get mentioned on NHL.com, I was just posting a link to one article. Its not about how good a ballplayer we think they are... I think he's the best shortstop in the game, you think he's an overpaid, bum on a team of good players.

After 9/11, I dedicated my network resources to raise some money for the cause, and I didn't get one ounce of recognition, but that isn't important.

Thanks.

I think articles like that are good. Many athletes might do charity work but the article points out one specific example. It's not taking away from the work of anyone else.

TSN took a group of players that do positive things outside of sports, and ranked them. They took it into their hands to decide whose cause is better. That is absolutely wrong.

If TSN simply decided to write an article about Derek Jeter and his charitable work, then I would wholeheartedly support that, but that is not what they did. They decided he was better than everyone else.

Did you even read my first post?

But that is exactly what this article is.

Did you even read the post before that post which is the post that that passage was in reference to?

At any rate, athletes getting recognized for doing good things is not a bad thing, Defska. TSN took it into their own hands - GOOD FOR THEM. I wish more major publications would take it into their hands to select a yearly Good Guy, a person that THEY (and no one else) feel has done a lot of Community Work, we need pieces like this to offset all of the bad stuff, which people like to gobble up so easily.

Now you are putting words in my mouth, Patrick. Yes, the Yankees and Jeter are overpaid, as are most athletes. I surely didn't say Jeter was a bum. I would say he is a average, typical player in a watered down league. The Tigers are the real bums. I just have a problem with publications that select high profile players over others who do just as much. But that's just the nature of the biz and I couldn't give a rats * about that kind of stuff anyway. I applaud all those who give their time and money for charitable causes. It ain't easy. I know because I am a trustee with a public school educational foundation and help other organizations.

Yep, for sure.

Well, basically... an "average, typical player" paid 18-21 million (I forget what Jeter makes) is really a bum, isn't he? I mean, if an average player is paid among the leagues elite, he's a bum.
