Greetings --

One fact that's not been touched upon regards the priority order of the particular exemptions with which both Annika Sorenstam and Suzy Whaley gained admission into the Colonial and Hartford events.

The PGA Tour has 34 different exemption categories. Categories 1 thru 19 are called "Primary Special Exemptions", while Categories 20 thru 34 are called "Other Exemptions".

NOTE -- Hartford is an "open" event. It can use up to all 34 categories. Colonial is an invitational event (just like Bay Hill, Memorial, Heritage). It may not necessarily use all 34 categories, plus it may have one or two unique invitational categories.

Annika got into the Colonial via Exemption Category 12 (Sponsor Invitation), while Suzy Whaley got into Hartford via Exemption Category 15 (PGA Section Champ/Player-of-the-Year).

As you can see, both of those categories rank above such things as the Top 125 Money Winners, Top 10 and ties from the last "open" event on the schedule, Nationwide Tour Top 15, Q-School Top 35 and Past Champions (other than those in Category 18).

In simple terms, both Sorenstam and Whaley had priority exempt status over more than half of the respective fields!

Ah yes - Before we forget! Earlier this year, Michelle Wie attempted to Open Qualify (Exemption Category 17) for the Sony-Hawaiian Open. Had she been successful, 13-year-old Michelle would have enjoyed prime exempt status over half the field in that event! - WOW!

Any Questions Class ??

As you briefly pointed out and quickly hurried by: Whaley qualified. One of the qualification's for entry into the GHO is winning the event that she did.

Quite a bit different from sponsors exemption, which is what Sorenstam had... and was the idea one, really.
