In the late 1800's there were seven brothers with the last name of Stanley. One of them became the Governor General of Canada and in 1892 he donated a cup aptly named The Stanley Cup which was awarded to the best team in hockey.
Ironically none of the Stanley brothers all of whom played hockey were on a winning Stanley Cup Team.
The Ottawa Senators have won the cup 21 times making them second only to Montreal in Cup wins and their last victory was 8-3 over Boston Bruins in 1927.
Now in their 11th year after returning to the NHL The Ottawa Senators are chasing cup victory 22. It would be a great story if that happens..
A little bit of Sunday morning trivia for us non-church goers. |

All the records I could find only date back to 1893, where Ottawa had only won 11 cups. Any idea where to gert records prior to that?
Here is the best I could find...

Yes. The information about the Senators really surprised me as I thought they had only won 11 cups but apparently not.
The Stanley Cup Centennial Book has all the information and the history about the trophy. The book is a part of the NHL archives, the information in it has been verified by whom I do not know. This book is also available elsewhere but I cannot help you there. I do know that the NHL stands by what is in it.
One of the interesting facts in there, and there are many, is after the Ottawa Senators won the Stanley Cup in 1927 by beating the Bruins, the following year the NHL was born and the Stanley Cup became its banner trophy.
Did you know that the Kenora Thistles also won the Cup? |

yea, january 1907 (although I didn't know this until I checked out the site) So I suppose it is a commonn misconception saying that there were only 6 teams when the NHL was born. It seems like it would be more accurate to say that only 6 teams have remained in the NHL from the begining _________________ I AM CANADIAN

This might of some help-. What you are looking for is " The Official National Hockey League Stanley Cup Centennial Book" published in 1992.
The way things went back in those years was different than today of course. Some of the names of the Teams that battled for this Cup are really interesting. For example:Montreal Victorias, Winnipeg Rowing Club, Brandon Wheat Kings,Edmonton Eskimos, Seattle Metropolitans, Vancouver Millionaires and the Bosoton Bruins.
Many of these cup victories came about by challenges, sometimes by playoff series and so on.
The first year in which the NHL had sole possession of the cup Ottawa beat Boston Bruins in the series final and that was 1927.
Hope this helps. |
