**Note** This is a project for my History 12 class. I would appreciate it if you could respond with a school appropriate response.

The Russians have displayed weak performance at the 2010 winter Olympics this year compared to the past. Such a powerful strong nation has been slacking into the lower ranks of the top ten. The poor performance of the athletes has infuriated the new Russian President and he recommends the trainers to resign.

Why do you think such an industrious superpower has done so poorly?

better preformances by Canada and the U.S. The talent pool is too deep in these countries, and has overtaken the russians.

I don’t like the headline… But It’s true. And it wasn’t unexpected result. Really, wasn’t.

We have to understand, that sport is a long-term investment.
Before these Games (Vancouver Games) the Soviet past generously paid to us dividends, but in Canada “the bank” has been closed.

The sport systems in America and in the USSR/Russia, to my mind, are different.
As for my country, throughout many years the government entirely financed all sports development programs.

My father told me that in the Soviet period trainers went to kindergartens (!) and selected talented children (of course, it was parent’s and children’s own free will).
And, even If the person hadn’t succeeded in sports, all the same he/she would have kept love to healthy life-style.

In 1990 all has changed. In the list of the government priorities sports took the last place.
And children, instead of going to sports sections, started to sit in an armchair or walk in streets.

And here, later 20 years we can see the result.

One more reason of our mediocre performance is our officials. They still live on the Soviet template and can’t understand objective reality and handle it.

Therefore it is necessary to search for the causes of our "weakness" not only in today, but also in the past.

Sportsmen who can become champions are like diamonds.
To find a diamond is needed to search it. If we are able to create right atmosphere for young men for their development, we will become leaders again... a 10-20 years later

I hope for the Olympic Games in Sochi. It should push our children to sports.

P.S. I apologize to you for my mistakes. English isn’t my natural language)

A country that is struggling with massive economic collapse has bigger things to worry about than sports. I think they are just reorganizing their priorities. I really hope they do make a good showing at the Sochi Olympics. I hope their hockey team makes a better shwoing, at the very least.

In the past when the country was under Soviet rule, there was more state funding for sport in general, especially sport that Russians excelled at. Russians worked more for pride than money, and there were some talented coaches. The network to train new athletes was stronger. In the new Russia, unfortunately a side product is that capitalism and privatization push the money elsewhere and not enough taxes are paid into the pot for grassroots coaching and encouragement of such Winter sports. There is incredible talent in Russia but without financial support, this talent often doesn't emerge. Sport is much bigger money in America, so they have a more established support network. Of course, give Russia 20 years to establish similar systems and the country is sure to produce stronger contenders.
