Does anyone have an opinion of any recently retired players who deserve to have their number retired? I am sure Big Mac, Cal and Tony will have theirs retired. I personally think Paul O'Neill's number should be retired by the Yankees. He was a constant on the team for 9 years or more. I dont think that it is a coincidence that the Yankees started winning shortly after he got there. As evident in the last WS game in Yankee stadium, he was loved by the fans. Does anyone agree or disagree? What other players would you suggest?

Great another Yankee fan..
I think the Yankees started winning when their pitching got good and Jeter and Bernie emerged as stars...

I agree that retiring numbers will eventually eliminate itself cause theres only so many numbers, unless they want triple-digits. I think that many teams use this too freely also, it should only be reserved for players that had an amazing impact on a team, obviously Tony and Cal. But...where would Mac be retired? Oakland or St. Louis? He was big in Oakland but I wouldnt say he had an amazing impact there...and he only flouirished for a season or two in St Louis...in my book, Mac is not deserving of a number retired.
Regarding O'Neil, great player, but to play on a team notable for Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, etc. etc. how can you put Paul O'Neil's number up there with them? Sure the fans may have loved him, but did he really leave an impact on the team, or the city? Doubt it. |
