From ESPN:

Quote:
The Philadelphia Phillies have reached an agreement with the Oakland Athletics to acquire right-handed pitcher Joe Blanton. ...

The Athletics get second baseman Adrian Cardenas, pitcher Josh Outman and outfielder Matthew Spencer, all minor leaguers.

Thoughts?

For the A's, again a great trade. There getting all of these infield prospects to obtain more starting pitching. I think billy beane is a genious.

For the phillies, this is just for the playoff run. Solid pitcher, good pick up.

I've always though the A's have done a really good job in the front office, staying relatively competitive with a low payroll. But what I don't get is that they are always making these moves with an eye towards the future. Well, when exactly IS the future? They basically just mortgaged off the rest of the season by dealing Harden and Blanton and they are only 5 games out of a playoff spot. I guess I can understand the Harden deal because he's a FA at the end of the season, but Blanton still has another year left.

I guess you can say, "Well if you trade Harden the season's over anyway so you might as well unload Blanton," which may be true. But all that does is set up the same situation again next year when somebody else's contract is running out and they find themselves in a similar position in the standings. Billy Beane's been rightfully commended for the job he's done in Oakland, especially early on in this decade, but he's gotta be careful and avoid turning mediocrity into a neverending cycle with all these deals.

Good points, shamedog. At some point, I would think he would make a deal that would put them over the top in their division. The fans will start grumbling sometime soon.

Ya the Phillies needed this a lot, while they do have a solid bullpen, they have only 2 good starters, so Blanton helps them in their playoff run..Oakland as always gets new an fresh prospects, an im sure they'll contend as usual
