From ESPN.com:

Quote:
The Penguins are free to move when the 2006-07 season ends following a state panel's rejection Wednesday of a casino company's offer to build the team a new arena for free.

Lemieux said talks will begin shortly with state and local leaders about a new arena but added a move outside Pennsylvania is another option.

"Accordingly, starting today, the team is off the market," Lemieux said, "and we will begin to explore relocation offers in cities outside Pennsylvania."

It'd be a shame to see them move because the Pittsburgh Penguins over the last 15+ years have become one of the league's marquee franchises, despite some disappointing seasons the last few years. But the sport is a business and if they are going to continue to lose millions upon millions of dollars every year a change of location is probably necessary.

I lived in the pittsburgh area for about 10 years and that town is all about the steelers. Penguins are hardly ever even put on TV. Pitt bball games make it on over the penguins. I know they have some fans, but it is just not a big hockey area (I don't believe there is even a high school hockey association in PA). I will be sad to see the team go, but without the support of the fans and the people in the area in general there isn't much hope is there.

It is a bit hard though to compare a city being a "hockey town" as opposed to other sports. It's not really a good measure of how the franchise is doing in a certain area. New York is really not considered a "hockey town" either, but the Rangers thrive as a business.

What does hurt the franchise is that like podoproud mentioned, the games don't even make it onto T.V. It's one of the same reasons that caused the Montreal Expos to move to Washington. Hockey can be a secondary sport in a big market like New York and Chicago and still be successful, but it's harder in a smaller market like Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh has had its chances to revive this franchise, and they have failed to do so. Its time to move. A team with young superstars like Crosby and Malkin shouldn't be trapped in a town that doesn't care about them. I feel for the die-hard fans in Pittsburgh who would lose their team, and I know there are some, but this team has been on the rocks for a while with no visible improvement. But don't move them to another small american market. I think its time that an eastern Canadian city got a professional sports franchise. Imagine Crosby in Halifax? the whole area would go nuts.

It likes like there's a chance to stay and they should. Yes, Canada would go nuts if Crosby played there but with the talent the Pens have they could be a dynasty soon.

OK, look. If the Penguins moved, where would they move? And if they did the place they would move to would need a big enough rink and all the ice hours to support them.
Yes i think that the Penguins in a few years will be a dynasty, and a darn good one at that! I'm tell you now, after a few good draft picks and Crosby and Malkin can only get better, I only see good things for them.
Money wise, they have got to be losing money staying in Pittsburgh, but look what they will lose if they move. Thats right, a lot more, a whole lo more.

Thing is the quality of the team winning and talent-wise has really no bearing on whether they move or not. It's a financial issue that has nothing to do with the team's performance on the ice.

Kansas City has been mentioned as a possible landing spot if they can't stay in Pittsburgh. It seems that hockey is still pretty big in Hartford too even after losing the Whalers. In the end, I think they will stay, but there are a lot of issues that need to be resolved.

Kansas City, mentioned, yes, but who likes hockey in Kansas? No offense to people that want the Penguins in Kansas, but i think that they would need to go more in between Chicago, Nashville, Columbus, and Atlanta. All those states have Pro teams.

In fact that would put you in Indiana, all Indiana has hockey wise is A USHL (Ice) team and a IHL (the Komets). Pro wise they got the Pacers who are not that good, playoff material, but no Champs, and the Colts, who are (personal opinions here) AMAZING!
