| He had 11 all-star appearances because he was the best catcher of his time, that doesnt mean he was an amazing catcher, it just means there was noone else better. |

But Mattingly was a 1st baseman. That hurt his chances of making into the hall. Maybe If he played a little longer...

But there are higher standards for a first baseman than a catcher. Keith Hernandez had eleven gold gloves, an MVP award, and had a .296 lifetime batting average. He's not in either so don't feel too bad.. I think Steve Garvey has good stats too, but still, not in the hall of fame either..

my thoughts exactly, who cares what position they play?
obviously, throughout the course of history, catchers tend to not put up the stats of, say, a first baseman. that doesnt mean that since they play the position of catcher, they are unable to put up those stats, they just tend not to. dont put someone into the hall because of that loophole. |
