How did your team get it's nickname? Got any unusual stories to share?
My scoccer team is called Sheffield Wednesday. They originally started out life in 1867 as a cricket AND soccer club that practiced on... guess which day of the week....  They dropped the cricket when they found out that they were much better soccer players, although going by recent form they should go back to cricket. 
Their nickname is The Owls. This is because the area of Sheffield in which they are sited is called Owlerton, although it didn't actually get that name until the 1930's. Before they were called The Owls, they were nicknamed The Blades, which is now the nickname of their fierce rivals, Sheffield United.
My rugby team (Rotherham RUFC) are nicknamed The Millers. That's because the area used to be a big grain milling areaand their ground is on the site of an old mill.
My basketball team are the Sheffield Steelers. That's because Sheffield used to be a big steel-producing city.
