Great move by the Canucks. They lock up the best goalie in the league for long term and get him at a great price.

I think the NHL should try to do something about these long term contracts. Luongo himself may be worth it, but I think overall these kind of deals could end up being bad for the game.

Is it because of the possibility of injury?

Well I think it's just because of the long term commitment that these teams are making in a salary cap league. If a guy does get hurt or doesn't play as well as expected, it could hurt the team for a competitive standpoint for a long time.

I don't think the league should care... if the team wants the risk, let them take it on.

I agree, but remember the people signing off on these deals are the same owners who complain about player salaries being too high every time the clock starts ticking on a CBA.

A salary cap is supposed to exist not only to keep salaries under control, but also to create parody in a league and when all these teams are bogged down with long term contracts, you could end up with a situation like the NBA where every year it's basically the same 4 or 5 teams in the running and pretty much every team knows basically where they're going to find themselves in the end before the season even begins.

Sure, the purpose of a salary cap is to HELP create parody, but it is the responsibility of management to make the right decisions.

Do you think there is parody in the NBA? Not really. Do you think the Memphis Grizzlies and LA Clippers are in last place every year because the system is broken and the NBA hasn't stepped in? No, it's because they make horrible basketball decisions.

The same is true in hockey. If a team wants to give out these contracts for 10 years, do it. You may have locked up one of the top players in the league for a decade, or you may have taken on a player who will be productive for the first 2 years of his contract and then be terrible. GMs make these decisions and they have to live with them.

The league cannot create parody...they just can't. All they can do is make the rules and get out of the way. That's what is great about sports...

And on another front, do you really think the NHL wants parody? Or would they rather see the Red Wings and other big market teams in the finals every year? The answer is the latter.
