Hendrick MotorSports drivers Jimmie Johnson (defending Nextel Cup champ) and Jeff Gordon (current points leader) both failed NASCAR inspections at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California.
Apparently, they tweaked the front fenders to try to get more downforce on the cars, and NASCAR said that it was out of spec. Therefore, the cars were disqualified from taking place in any track activities today, including qualifying. The two drivers will have to start from the back of the pack. Gordon is last years winner of this race. However, no one has ever started this race from the rear of the pack and then won.
I expect fines of around $100,000 each, 100 driver points, and 100 owner points from each of the teams. The crew chiefs could get suspended anywhere from 4 to 6 races as well.

I think Johnson is 3rd in the standings, and Gordon is leading. The deduction will bring Denny Hamlin within around 120 points of the lead. And Hamlin has been running strong this year, too. _________________ www.chiefswarpath.com |

Well, the hammer fell, and both drivers were docked 100 championship points, fined $100,000, and had their crew chiefs suspended for 6 races each. NASCAR has been very consistent with their penalties this season, and I think they need to continue to do so.
The only problem with the penalities is that it seems like they are fairly easy to work through, as far as the points penalties are concerned.

Hendrick was only docked 100 owner points, as Gordon is the owner of Johnson's car. Therefore, Gordon was also docked 100 owner points. _________________ www.chiefswarpath.com |
