|
|
From the Fox Sports website: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7349692
Even in the wake of the statement that George Steinbrenner made to the newspaper in New Jersey, the Yanks still offered Torre a chance to stay, but he declined. The two have parted ways.
What happens now? Which players are going to leave now? Who will be the next manager of the Yankees? I think that Joe Girardi is the front runner, to be honest, but they want to talk with Don Mattingly as well. Time will tell... _________________ www.chiefswarpath.com |

Good for Mr. Torre, really. They made him an offer that they had to guess he would turn down in an effort to save some face, but I think most people will see through that. Torre flew down to meet with them face to face and told them no. I don't blame him at all. In fact, I probably would have done the same thing. And then for Levine to come out and say that we believe people should be motivated... come on.
I think what happens now is Mattingly is going to be hired. If they care about the fan base's emotions, as they do since they made this questionable offer, then Mattingly is the guy because he is a big time, beloved Yankee.
Money talks, of course, but this will not help us with Posada, Mo and Pettitte. With A-Rod, I don't think it matters. _________________ Patrick O'Keefe - SportsForums.net Administrator

When I saw the press confrence a little while ago i agreed with what torre said "When you lose 3 or 4 games on the last year of a contract that question comes up" he is completely right. The yanks expected him to decline and offered him something just so they didn't look bad. good move for torre
I don't see how you can get rid of a guy after just 7 years without a WS. The cubs are at like 99 years. I don't like the yanks move here _________________ Colts repeat

expectations are prolly really high......esspecially since they pay huge amounts of money for players, i guess anything less then a title is noted as failure
but i would love to see my team ALWAYS go to the playoffs every year, and thats something the yankees always do......they just have been having a problem getting to that world series _________________ NHL = Nashville Predators

Where do you think torre should go?
Should he try to get in Chicago and finally win them a WS and get rid of pinella? Or should he go to a good team and make them great?
I think torre should go to the NY Knicks and turn them around. _________________ Colts repeat

I kind of felt bad for Torre. He is a class act, and deserves to still be the manager of the Yankees. I think if there would have been some guarantee in the contract that he would not have been fired early on if they got off to a slow start (like this season) then I think he may have felt more comfortable in taking the job. However, there was no security, and if anything, Torre has earned the right to some security.
I don't think the Cubs should pick him up. Pinella did a good job with them, and has a good track record himself. I think the Royals could have given him some thought, but that organization has to want to spend some money, first. Perhaps the Pirates will look into Torre? Maybe the Orioles? That would be a rip if he stayed managing in the AL East. _________________ www.chiefswarpath.com |

I thnk the pirates or Orioles would be great for torre, if he could trun them around, and for the organizations.
But how much can a manager do? He doesn't call the plays and he isn't out there on the field. How much did he matter when it comes to the playing levels of the players? _________________ Colts repeat

I don't see Torre managing anywhere else, at least next year, and I really don't see him taking over a rebuilding franchise. He's getting up there and years and probably wouldn't be very interested in a long-term rebuilding project.
Another thing working against other teams as far as bringing in Joe Torre goes is that he's very big on loyalty and besides the Yankees, who are from his hometown, he's never managed for a team that he hasn't played for. That eliminates everybody aside from the Mets, Cardinals and Braves, who all have managers. |

Well, the Cards are out of the Torre hunt now also, since LaRussa is coming back.
I think Torre was done wrong by the Yanks anyway. I mean, made the playoffs every year, won 4 WSs and 6 AL titles....what more can ya ask of a manager? _________________ T-Money
