A baseball player doesn't just go to work for 4 hours a day for 162 days (more like 6-8 hours a day with pregame and postgame stuff). He is required to practice with the team each day. Attend spring training. And thats just where the baseball ends. On the plane. Off the plane. On the bus. Off the bus.
Most of them keep themselves in extremely good shape with a ton of time dedicated to exercise. Then you have the fact that the ones that are making the most money are some of the few in the world like them. Not everyone can be A-Rod, Jeter, Mussina, Johnson or Maddux. Then you have dealing with the press virtually every day. The high profile's have press follow them around everywhere. Well, you might say "I'd love to do all that." Maybe you would (although you would get tired of it fast), but the truth is that you do not have the talent to do so and they are some of the few who do.
The fact is, its not worth travelling the country, living out of a hotel for half a year and being away from your family and everything else, then spending hours upon hours in the offseason working on your game and shape, for $25,000.
As I said before, salaries are comparable to their sports and teams revenue. Baseball players should make more, because their sport makes more. As much as they can get, good for them, because they earned it and worked for it as a child/teenager and as an adult.
Spike,
I think the owners get a bad wrap. They deserve a little money. They shouldn't hoard it up, but they shouldn't lose money. _________________ Patrick O'Keefe - SportsForums.net Administrator

| That is true. The point is, you can still play professional sports for much less then what people are paid. Maybe something like 25,000 a year plus a percent of team revenue would be reasonable for pay. |
Thats like minimum wage
sports players are too important to the economy to only be making 25 grand. They would here crap from their secretary wives (who make more than them) about getting a new job that pays more. |
Notice I did say a percentage of the teams profits. With say the Yankees, that would probiblly be over a million.
Despite what everone here seems to think, sports are just games. They shouldn't be one of the easiest ways to make money. _________________ Detroit Red Wings / NHL.com / Sporting News

well msot of the mlb teams lost revenue last year. Except maybe 3 unamed teams. So it would be minimum wage. ITs not easy to make it into pro sports. Look into the percentages of high school jocks taht make it big. not very high _________________ My teams

Well you could say the same thing about movie stars and musicians who rake in the big dough. It's just "entertainment". Certainly not the value I would place on like teachers in our society. |

Don't get me started on musicians and movie stars. They are in the same group as athletes. Paid way more then they're worth. _________________ Detroit Red Wings / NHL.com / Sporting News

i competly disagree. They bring in so much money for the American economy that is in desperate need for a lift. IF u dont like it then u should stop watching tv, sports, and movies. Not to mention all the products that celebs and sports icon endorse. _________________ My teams

I watch very little tv, watch sports that dont bring in large amounts of money (hockey, soccer, nascar, international sports). I don't watch alot of movies either. I don't buy crap because some "big-shot" person recommends it too. _________________ Detroit Red Wings / NHL.com / Sporting News

What are the best sports in the world?
Baseball? It puts me to sleep.
Basketball? Pro basketball is a bore too.
Football? I do watch that occationally. _________________ Detroit Red Wings / NHL.com / Sporting News
