I agree. You do not win purely on luck. There are opportunities in golf, those which good players will take advantage of and bad players won't. Sorry if that sounds like a cliche but it is true.

Well, in most or a lot of things, anyway. Everything is a bit inclusive.

At any rate, I don't know if there is ever "the" element of luck, but maybe small elements of it. Field goals... like golf, roll of the ball. In this case, through the air. The best take that factor out of it as much as possible, but that seems like something. In outdoor games, not getting a last second gust or stoppage of wind to blow the ball away.

In boxing, I don't know. That your shoes don't come untied. That the lights don't get in your eyes and you get blinded and then flattened.

Luck is a tricky thing, though. What I am talking about is also thought of as making things happen or performing, as well. Sometimes it is a factor and sometimes it is not, depending on what you are doing.

well in boxing if their wasnt luck or chance involved then ROy JOnes JR. wouldnt have gotten robbed of a gold medal. ANd Ali would have beaten frazier 3 outta 3 times.

Tiger had this to say after he made that chip at The Masters:

Quote:
"A lot of it's luck, but I hit it right on the spot," he said. "When I have a collar of rough like that behind my ball, I don't know whether I'm going to spin it or not. But I checked it up nicely, and it rolled down. It was pretty sweet."

I don't think that there is any more luck in golf than in any other sport. I don't think it is luck though, it's just the result of not playing in a vacuum. Pretty much every sport requires that players interact with their enviornment while competing.

I think you could call "luck" another word for all those factors that change the way things turn out. Plus, it's an easy word to say: "It's your lucky day!" is easier to say than, "The intangible forces that change the way things turn out are incredibly with you today!". Say that and watch the people slooooowly back away from you...
