This is a classic NHL discussion topic: is fighting good for the NHL?

My opinion: no. I just stick with the classic response: Olympic hockey is the best hockey out there. There is not a lot of contact in Oly hockey and the game is just so much better.

I love watching Olympic hockey, and it is hard for me to get into NHL hockey.

I think it's part of the game. But then kids look up to the players and start fighting during hockey games. Maybe they can try to discourage it more.

I am going to disagree with you here defska. I think "controled fighting" is good for the game. You don't see as many fights as you used too, but I think they are ok as long as a ref is around to break it up when the opertunity presents itself. Fights allow players to release some emotions, pump up their team and get a little grit in their play. Contact is one of the most entertaining things about hockey. A good check to the boards gets the crowd going, is a way of instilling some intimidation into your oponents, and just pumped up your team giving them some comfidence to produce. Look how much more boring women's hockey is compared to mens, why you may ask, because they have pratically 0 contact. Don't get my wrong I love the olympics but I love hockey and it is part of the game

I actually found women's Olympic hockey much more entertaining than the NHL...maybe its just me though

I do understand your point, though, and to be honest, I do like the contact in the NHL. Its just that seems to be the biggest difference between NHL and Olympics and if Olympics is better (to me) than that must be the problem.

Are there any other drastic rule changes (besides the 2 line pass, which I dont like) between Oly and NHL?

well the rink is larger.... This influences the play of the game much more, this is one of the big reasons why there is less contact. Defenseman can't always afford to go after someone coming up the wing on a larger rink. I personally really enjoy the olmpics mainly because the whole patriotic thing kicks in

And I like it when Mike Richter only has to save 20-30 shots each game instead of 40+ like in the NHL...

I like the pace of the game. And you see lots of great players in the Olympics.

Yeah, the patriotic thing might have something to do with it too

From what I understand, and I am not a hockey fan (at all, I don't know the sport very well), fighting is part of hockey culture. So, its probably good for the game.

I'm so glad the NHL instituted the Olympic time limits between a stoppage of play and dropping the puck. Makes the game flow much better.

Fighting, which isn't even close to what it was years ago, is what makes N. American hockey so fun to watch. However, it does go a little overboard when someone like that goon for the Rangers, who only plays a few minutes a game, beat the snot out of a much smaller player during a face-off. Fighting is perfectly acceptable in the situations where you are handing out paybacks/protecting other players, but not for the sake of releasing frustration because your team sucks.
