The International Olympic Committe is discussing dropping baseball and softball from the summer olympics while considering to add golf and rugby.
http://espn.go.com/oly/news/2002/0828/1423814.html
I have no problems with dropping baseball and softball from the olympics. It is always rediculous that there is a bunch of minor leaguers playing because the MLB season overlaps with the Olympics and they cant send over any MLB players. If MLB could come up with a decision to, say, extend the All-Star break by a week-or-so every 4 years and send real ball players to the Olympics, then that would be a different story, but we all know that that will never happen so go ahead and dump the sport!
Adding golf is something I always thought deserved to be done. They play internationally anyways, why not make it international at the ultimate level?
And I have always wanted football as a part of the Olympics...rugby is the next best thing. I love watching rugby, so Id love watching it at the Olympcs...and maybe this is a step in the right direction to getting real football at the Olympics. _________________ Justin Lieber |

I think baseball should be recognized. I'm not a fan of seeing pro athletes from the US in the Olympics anyway. It's more exciting with college guys and such. _________________ -Wedge231 chris@c-wod.com

I dunno, I guess, but would you rather watch the Braves play the D-Backs on ESPN or turn NBC on and watch some dudes you never heard of? _________________ Justin Lieber |

Well, different people like different things. I wouldn't watch either. I only really watch the Yankees.
But, I understand your point. However, there are people that watch the NFL. There are people that watch college football. There are people that watch high school football. The two latter usually feature quite a few guys that the spectator has never heard of, until they make an impression. And these types of people will be drawn to it, in addition to the patriotic types that want to see the US win. _________________ Patrick O'Keefe - SportsForums.net Administrator

Thats true, I mean, i watch the Olympics when they are on, watching people I have never heard of competing in sports that I have never heard of...but it is still fun to root for the US. The problem with baseball is that I know of US baseball players and when I watch Oly Baseball I am always thinking, "we would rule if we put Bonds, Sosa, and Piazza out there" _________________ Justin Lieber |

Wouldn't the Domincan team be just as good?
I think that there are some other sports in the Olympics that could be taken off instead of Base/Softball, like table tennis for one. _________________ It takes a lot of punishment to be able to do anything to change the social order.
