I have an Interleague question. Why is Houston playing Texas in Interleague play? How long has that been going on? Did they just start that this year because I just noticed it just now?

I thought only the A.L. West played the N.L. West, the A.L. Central played the N.L. Central and the A.L. East played the N.L. East because Houston plays in the National League Central and Texas plays in the American League West.

You're right. I can see the merit of matching Texas/Houston, but I've noticed a few very strange match-ups...like both Detroit and Kansas City visiting Arizona, which doesn't seem to make much sense to me.

All I can say is that I never wanted Interleague play and I still am not really a fan of it.

I like it but I can't explain these matchups.

I actually used to like Interleague play when it first started, I want to say about 5 years ago, but the novelty of it has worn of off me.

It does help some teams struggling attendance wise. Like over here the A's barely get any good attendance figures till the Giants play them in Oakland, then they get like around 50,000 every game.

And I do like the really close regional rivalries, like the Mets and the Yankees, the Angels and the Dodgers, the White Sox and the Cubbies, the Giants and the A's. If they did away with all of the Interleague play except for those regional rivalries, I wouldn't mind that.

Overall, I think it's gotten to the point they should just get rid of Interleague play all together because the novelty has worn off or they should do like the N.F.L. and rotate the divisions every year, so you get to play everyone at least once every 3 or 4 years (like so we could have the Yankees play the Dodgers and Giants every once in a while. Just remembering when all three teams were in the New York area) and that would boost attendance.

Oh yeah I hadn't noticed that either.

Excellent post Spike. I think many people would love to see a short series of Yankees/Dodgers games for example, though the schedule is just becoming more and more unbalanced.

I've never really liked the idea of Interleague play though ever since they brought it in in 1997. I feel teams should be competing against each other for the pennant over the same schedule and against more or less the same opponents. With due respect to Tampa Bay fans, if for example the Florida Marlins had 10 or 12 games a year against the Devil Rays (the worst team in the majors), when nobody else in the Marlin's division got to play them, then that gives Florida an advantage over everyone else in their division (assuming they beat them most of the time!)

On ESPN's Sunday night game Chipper Jones was saying how he doesn't like Interleague play at all...but then he was being interviewed just before having to go out in front of 50,000 at Yankee Stadium to face the daunting Mike Mussina!

Yeah I like the idea of rotating divisions. Mets Vs Mariners would be cool.

Though it would be really cool to see these kinds of "special matchups", i agree with scooby saying that this would be very unfair for the rest of the division

I never liked interleague play from the start and i think its worse now that it has been here for a few years. It would be better if the rotated the divisions, but even that wouldn't save it.

I, personally, liked the idea that you'd only be able to face the other league in the World Series, kind of a privelage. It also made the Series harder to predict because the teams had most likely never met before or st least in the past several years, this would make it more interesting too.

Another thing that makes interleague play difficult is the fact that there is a DH in the AL and no DH in the NL...this puts the AL at an advantage because when using the DH, they have a player on there team that is DH on a daily basis. When they dont use the DH there is no advantage either way (a significant one anyways) because regardless of whether the pitchers are used to hitting or not, for the most part they still suck (save mike hampton, of course )

And in response to the fact that interleague play boosts attendance for teams that attract a small fan base normally: if a team can only attract "fans" to watch the opposing team play, they should seriously wonder why there is a franchise in that city. Fans should support their team through thick and thin, period.
