Quote:

The Charlotte Hornets applied to move to Memphis Monday, but one owner says the team is still committed to working out a deal in Charlotte.

"Our hope is to have an acceptable agreement with Charlotte. We have to protect our rights if (a final) agreement cannot be reached," Hornets co-owner Ray Wooldridge said in an exclusive interview with The Observer.

Wooldridge added that if he didn't meet the NBA's Monday deadline to file for relocation, and a planned June referendum on an arena package fails, it would be "a financially disastrous situation" that could cost the Hornets $25 million to $40 million next season as a lame-duck franchise.

While Monday's filing opens the door for the Hornets' to leave, a move is still far from certain. Another NBA team, the Vancouver Grizzlies, also has applied to move to Memphis. And since that team has worked toward a move for months, it seems unlikely the Hornets would get priority.

I mean, I didn't think Charlotte was that bad of a market, but I guess it is. Memphis is a large city and there is not basketball team in Tenn. or Mississippi, so maybe there is a place for it.

Yeah and the Grizzlies want to move to Memphis as well. Who would have thought. It's rare that 2 teams want to move the same year let alone want to relocate to the same city.

If I was Memphis though, as young and ripe with talent are the Grizzlies, I would choose the Hornets over them because at least the Hornets are a contender.

Heh, a year later, well they ended up in New Orleans but Memphis still got a team.
