Tony Gwynn is to make it official that he'll retire at the end of the season. Even though I knew it was coming, and I had been kinda hoping for him to retire for at least a year now, it is still a shock to think about baseball without Tony Gwynn.
I grew up watching Tony and learned to love the game because of Tony, when i was younger and in little league baseball I used to dream of being a right fielder for the San Diego Padres and follow in the steps of Tony.
To me, Tony is the greatest player ever. Baseball will never be the same without him.
...but i guess look on the bright side: his rookie card that i own will prolly jump in value after this
check out this link in Yahoo! on Gwynn & Ripken:

Nice link to the interesting Gwynn/Ripken article.
I agree. Like Ripken, Gwynn is one of the all-time greats and will be very sadly missed...that's going to be some ceremony at Cooperstown in 5 years time! I guess they may both go in at the same time. I think I heard that Gwynn's last game will be at Pacific Bell Park? |

yeah the pads close the season with a 3 game set at san francisco...these will be his last games assuming he's in the lineup
it will sure be a party in cooperstown in a few years wont it? gwynn and ripken, 2 of the best people baseball has ever known, will finally get there due. it still sucks to see him go. |

It's definitely a shame to see him go.
20 years with the same team is a great accomplishment, though.
Ripken and Gwynn in the same Hall of Fame class - that'll be a great ceremony

This man should not retire. He can still hit. He can't field or run the bases that good anymore because of his various ailments on his body.
But I saw the Giants-Padres game last Saturday night and Tony Gwynn came up with the bases loaded and the Padres down 2 runs and the crowd gave him a standing ovation as he came up to the plate and then after he got the base hit that drove in 2 runs to tie the game and he was pinch run for, they gave him another standing ovation. I mean the place looked electric. He drove that ball through what I would call the 3.5 hole (on the Padres' homefield, between 2nd base and 3rd base there's a big marking in the dirt that says, "5.5" designating a favorite part of the field that Gwynn likes to shoot line drives through, "The 5.5 hole between the shortstop and the 3rd baseman").
I don't think he should retire. I think he should play another year just as a pinch hitter for San Diego. He'd be the most dangerous pinch hitter in the game like he is this year. And the crowd in San Diego would give him standing ovations every time he would come up. His career batting average is still at .338. |
