Hey All,

I have been playing with an old set that my dad gave me for a while, and I'm planning to buy a new set soon and I just wanted to hear opinions on which brands I should consider. I'm going to buy a complete set to save time and money. I'm not a great player so preferably some with a little forgiveness, and I would like to keep the price under $400. Basically, I just want to get the best set possible for the money.

Thanks for the help.

sorry but you may not find a decent set with keeping it at 400.

you could buy clubs seperate. here is what you will need

putter
driver
3 wood
3 iron
6 iron
9 iron
pitching wedge

buy them all at dicks sporting goods and that should bring you to very close to 400

I agree, you may not get a good full set for under $400. Separate clubs is not a bad way to go, and the list of necessary clubs that was posted above is really all you will need. You can always continue to add to the set through time as the need arises. As far as what clubs to choose, that is entirely up to you. Obviously the more popular brands are the way to go (Ping, Calloway, Titelist) but it is entirely up to how they feel to you.

I might suggest that you spend a little time talking with someone at your local pro shop. They will usually have test sets of the clubs they have for sale that they will let you try out on the range.

I would suggest you check out a local club maker and have clubs fit for you. Cost is usually less than off the shelf and they will work better.
For example I have a set of forged cavity backs with True Temper Dynamic Golf S300 shaffs that I got for half the price of a similar set in the stores.

It is important to have them fitted to you. That means shaft flex, length, lie, grip size, swing weight

Some of the better brands will "fit you" such as Ping and Taylor made but it is still a more general fit

For the money - and under the assumption your not a 0-8HCP

Hogan CFT Iron's are well-priced and are great clubs. (around $400US)

Cleveland TA6's are extremely popular and are great for all types of golfers. (around $500US)

Callaway X-18 demo's, if you can find them are a great buy as well - however even as demo's they retail around $575-650US.
