UPDATE 10-20-2003
Weighting for Official Money Reduced by 70%. Have revised all previous entries.
Latest Update: Post-11 ... Previous Updates: Posts-1, 7, 8, 9, 10

Greetings --

This is my take on the 2003 Player-of-the-Year race.

For years I've experimented with an objective points system, which is much like the one employed by the PGA of America's, as it accounts for wins in PGA Tour events, as well as Official Money and Scoring Average.

In addition to those, I also award points for finishes in a event (solo 2nd, 2-way tie for 4th, 7-way tie for 29th, etc.) as well as a player's standing on the All-Around Stats List.

Wins and Finishes in Grand Slam majors are worth more points than in regular events. The Players Championship points are worth the same as any of those for a Grand Slam major. Certain other events have enhanced point values assigned to them.

The Tour Championship points are worth 20% more than those for a regular tour event. If the PGA Tour would expand the field from 30 to 50 players, I'd fix the point value at twice the value as for a regular event.

I do not factor in such things as course rating or strength-of-field. In this system, the rules are quite simple -- the player with the most "cookies" at the end of the season wins! Having wins and being high on the Money List is also key!

Below are two sets of standings -- the first is after the PGA Championship, the second is after the NEC Invitational. From left to right -- Rank (most points), Player's Name, points behind, money, (money rank)

AFTER PGA CHAMPIONSHIP - 8/17/2003
------------------------------------------
1. Tiger Woods ... ****** | $4,832,496 (2)
2. Davis Love III - 584 | $5,122,038 (1)
3. Mike Weir ..... - 1310 | $4,508,938 (4)
4. Jim Furyk ..... - 1492 | $4,474,313 (5)
5. Vijay Singh ... - 2296 | $4,523,224 (3)
6. Kenny Perry ... - 2431 | $4,090,755 (6)

AFTER NEC INVITATIONAL and RENO-TAHOE OPEN - 8/24/2003
------------------------------------------
1. Tiger Woods ... ****** | $5,067,496 (2)
2. Davis Love III - 699 | $5,482,038 (1)
3. Jim Furyk ..... - 1577 | $4,637,646 (4)
4. Mike Weir ..... - 1612 | $4,556,938 (5)
5. Vijay Singh ... - 1621 | $4,686,557 (3)
6. Kenny Perry ... - 2663 | $4,118,905 (6)

At the NEC, Jim Furyk and Vijay Singh had better finishes (both in 3-way tie for 6th) than Mike Weir (7-way for 23rd). Furyk went from 5th to 4th in Money. Meanwhile, Weir went from 4th to 5th in Money, as well as tied-2nd to solo 3rd in Scoring Average.

Despite his 6th place NEC finish, as well as going from 4th to 1st in the All-Around Category, Vijay Singh couldn't pass Furyk or Weir on the FrankoSport points list.

So -- what's YOUR take on this?

Like I said in a different post, ranking based on money doesn't prove a whole lot because it only takes one lucky weekend to get a big paycheck, but that doesn't mean you're going to be worth a crap for the rest of the year.

You do have to finish well consistently to get near the top of the money list though. Winning 1 tournament doesn't put you up there.

Anyone on the above list can be considered player of the year. I don't think it'll be an easy choice for whoever decides that.

I would have to go with DLIII, even with his mid-season hiccup.

Looking at the stats I posted in the other thread, I think that if you are going to go with someone who didn't win a major, it's got to be Tiger. Same Top 25's, 1 more Top 10, 2 more Top 5, same 4 victories. Only out of Top 25 1/2 times. Granted, Love had more starts. So, I'll go with him, in his slump year.

Greetings --

Latest Standings (9-05-2003) in the 2003 Frank-0-Sport Points Race.

AFTER DEUTSCHE BANK CLASSIC - 9/1/2003
------------------------------------------
1. Tiger Woods ... ****** | $5,228,746 (2)
2. Davis Love III - 1208 | $5,482,038 (1)
3. Jim Furyk ..... - 1947 | $4,725,980 (4)
4. Mike Weir ..... - 2101 | $4,556,938 (5)
5. Vijay Singh ... - 2462 | $4,926,557 (3)
6. Kenny Perry ... - 3172 | $4,118,905 (6)
7. Ernie Els ..... - 3336 | $3,137,622 (8)
8. David Toms .... - 3960 | $3,337,323 (7)

From this point on, Ernie Els and David Toms will be a part of the standings. Any other player who wins 2-or-more 2003 PGA Tour events will also be added to this list.

Tiger Woods (from 2nd to 1st) and Vijay Singh (from 1st to 2nd) traded places on the All-Around List, which helped to widen the gap between Woods and the 7 others on the FrankoSport Points List.

With his victory at the John Deere Classic, Vijay Singh went from 5th to 2nd on the FrankoSport Points List. Singh's rise was aided as follows -- going from 3rd to 1st in money, from 3rd to 2nd in the All-Around Category plus minor gains of ground in 3 other stats. Tiger Woods lost a little ground by going from 2nd to 3rd in money, but remains 1st on the FrankoSport Points List.

Davis Love III sunk down to 3rd on the FrankoSport Points List - this a result of going from 1st to 2nd in money, as well as going from 2nd to 4th in the All-Around Category.
