Smeagol's History
Smeagol was orgionally a hobbit-like creature (there are different vareints of the Hobbit race, he was one of those).
Smeagol and his friend were out in the river near where the lived. The friend found a gold ring in the river. Smeagol wanted the ring so badly, he killed his friend. He then used the ring (and its invisiblity) to cause trouble in his village. He was eventually banished a went to live under the Misty Mountians.
Here he lived for 500 years (the Ring kept him alive). He lived on an underground lake, where he lived off raw fish (and the occational goblin). It was in this cavern the Ring left Smeagol and was picked up by Bilbo. See the hobbit
Without the Ring, Smeagol went crazy. He left his mountian home to search for "his precious". He was tracked down by Gandalf and Aragorn and captured. He was held by elves in Mirkwood, but he escaped. He was then captured by forces from Mordor and was tortured into revealing the name of the thief (Bilbo) and where he was from (the Shire). He later escaped and found then followed the fellowship.
When Frodo and Sam left the others, Smeagol followed. They eventually met and Smeagol decided to guide them to Mordor (in the hopes of stealing the Ring).
I won't go on further, so his role in the next movie will be a surprise to those who haven't read the book. _________________ Detroit Red Wings / NHL.com / Sporting News

| Thanks for the explanation. I'm just glad his loincloth stayed far enough down to hide his goods. |

Smeagol was incredible in the second movie. The actor that was responsible for Smeagol should have been nominated for an Academy Award, I don't know why he wasn't. _________________ Justin Lieber |

You realize that Smeagol was completely animated (yes there was an actor who did most things). Just like Yoda in the last SW movie. _________________ Detroit Red Wings / NHL.com / Sporting News

Gollum? What?
I did read the Hobbit, but I only saw the first movie (on tv ) so I'm not really sure what you guys are talking about. _________________ -Wedge231 chris@c-wod.com

Yes I am very aware of that. But the actor wore a special suit and acted out all the parts, they used his motions when the implemented the CGI. The same actor also did Smeagol's voice. He did everything but appear on screen. _________________ Justin Lieber |

I pretty much covered the big parts of Smeagol's (Gollum's) life up to The Two Towers. I got all the info there from The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings. We were talking how Smeagol fit into the story.

Very true. He (Andy Serkis) should get an award of some sort. He did an excellent job. _________________ Detroit Red Wings / NHL.com / Sporting News
