Whoa, Felipe Alou got fired? I thought he was supposed to be one of the best managers in the game.

It's not his fault that the Expos have one of the lowest payrolls in Major League Baseball, year in and year out. The Expos' organization probably looked at what Tom Kelly's done with the similiarly low budget Minnesota Twins and wondered why Alou can't do that.

Still the wrong decision to can him though. The Expos should have just thanked Alou for staying as long as he did in Montreal. He had the opportunity to go to other places (ie. like Los Angeles) when other job openings made themselves available to him while he was in Montreal and even stayed in Montreal when the Expos couldn't re-sign his own son. But I guess, Alou will get a lot of offers when future openings do come up here in the Majors.

Alou showed a lot of loyalty to the Expos and they in turn showed him the door.

Yeah, I think he has done a solid job in Montreal. I don't expect him to be unemployed very long, unless its his choice.

Florida could be a possibility.

It wouldn't be the first time that a good manager left a "cheap" team to go there. Jim Leyland made that move there from Pittsburgh, I remember. Of course, after that 1997 World Series title, Florida became a "cheap" team themselves.

But Florida's got some nice, young talent that could use the guiding hand of an Alou.

Or even to Boston? Jimy Williams and the Red Sox front office just don't see eye-to-eye. ESPN.com this morning are saying the Sox might be interested anyway.

Like everyone else, I feel really sorry for Alou. But the Expos are surely living on borrowed time in that city anyway. They can only draw 5,000 when guys like Johnson and Maddux or are the visiting pitchers, and they somehow managed to lose 40,000 fans in a week! They got 45,000 on opening day (swept the Mets in a 3-game series) but within a week they were down to around 5,000. They must be losing $$$$ every day. I'd have thought what they take at the gate wouldn't even cover Guerrero's wages.

It's really sad. Maybe Alou is relieved in a way that the decision has been made for him. I hope he gets a good manager's job somewhere in a city where the fans really want a baseball team.

He's been with the Expos for awhile, sad to see him get fired. Maybe he could go to the Mets? Bobby V isn't doing much right now.

Definitely a shame to see this happen to Felipe...I certainly hope he can get a managerial job where a team isn't as cheap as the Expos.
