He shot 81. First round of 80 or more of his professional career, although I may be wrong. Conditions at the course were very difficult and one bad shot could lead to a score like that. Els hit a driver for a 205 yard shot on a par 3 on that day.

Tournament is over now though and Ernie Els won in a playoff for his third major.

I know for a fact it was his first round of 80+ in a major ever, I am not sure if it was his first round ever of 80+ in any event, but I think you are right.

It was his first round over 80 as a professional golfer, I think they said the highest he had ever shot on one day was 79!

But against three of the worst elements, wind, rain and cold...there's not much you can do. I'm just surprised he manages to hold onto the club throughout his swing.
