USC-Notre Dame is the best college football rivalry in my mind. Those two teams have had a lot of history. _________________ My Teams:

I read today that Mike Shula and Tommy Tuberville have "discipline differences". While Mike Shula allowed one player to play that was involved in handgun possession and marijuana charges during the off season , Tommy Tuberville had a player that alcohol related incident occurred and he did not play during the opener.
Comparing and Contrasting rivals on the field, coaching style and schools is one thing that is interesting . Discipline differences is quite a STYLE, in itself.
First of all, there is and should be a "seperation" of CHURCH and STATE , not only in football , but in our judicial system. Mike Shula is not at ALABAMA to pass judgment on his players. The player in question , went to court, had the proper authorities and representation with him. Gun possession was dropped and he had some plea entered on the marijuana charge, which is not really The UNIVERSITY of ALABAMA's problem, is it?
Like it or not, right or wrong, Mike Shula is not the JUDGE. He's a young man's football coach, who can encourage his strengths and discourage his problems. That is the "AGE OLD" punitive vs.rehabilitation argument, isn't it? Does "punishment" help or hurt? Does occupational therapy encourage , recreational therapy play a part in rehabilitation? FOCUS on the players "GOOD", not his mistakes...That's what most people would agree to do. I think the JUDICIAL SYSTEM is a major stressor. If we would stop making COLLEGE COACHES GOD, we'd all be able "walk on water", right? I think BEAR BRYANT was criticized for both. Being too harsh, and being too lenient.
And , if we all could personally interject some action to help a person we were responsible for, would we be fair or unforgiving?
OUR SOCIETY place consequences TOO HIGH a priority, and UNDERSTANDING too low a priority. Most people are deviant or involved in deviance, not because they are LOVED and UNDERSTOOD, but ANGRY.
Maybe there are COACHES who believe in spanking more than EDUCATING. You don't want KIDS to GIVE UP! And you may not understand MIKE SHULA at all, or TOMMY TUBERVILLE. What the media reports and gets from situations of this nature are sometimes created for a news story, on a slow news day.
Discipline differences....Involving the JUDICIAL SYSTEM and a student athlete is in it's own context. Football is in it's own context and although the STRESSOR will effect the player, the CONSEQUENCES will also effect the player . And , that's the COURTS JOB, not MIKE SHULA's job. |
