was Benny D. (as i like to call him...dont ask ) wrong for bunting to break up the perfect game...theres been debate all over the place, even the announcers of the Braves game this morning were arguing about it

i dont think there was anything wrong with it, Davis was tryin to win the game for the Pads, they were only down 2 runs at the time and getting on base brought the tying run to the plate...especially in a division as tight as the NLWest where every game counts, i think doing everything he could to try to win the game was good baseball, he was just doing what he is paid to do

I was going to post something about this.

ABSOLUTELY NOT! There are two things on his mind. 1. They are still in it, get some base runners and manufacture runs. 2. You DO NOT want a perfect game on you. If you are down 100 to nothing and its 2 outs, bottom 9 with 2 strikes, you just want to get a hit, so your not no hit, at ANY cost.

Brenly was wrong to say anything.

my thoughts exactly

i was shocked to see brenly so vocally upset about it last night, and was actually kind of mad to see it...to criticize someone for trying to win a baseball game, and on top of that to question his knowledge of the game, was uncalled for

Quite right...what the hell was Bob Brenley talking about? If a pitcher is going to pitch a perfect game, he has to damn well earn it, not have it handed to him by the opposing team. I don't know who Brenley thinks he is, he's a first year manager and suddenly he's lecturing everyone on baseball etiquette. It was only a 2-0 ballgame at the time...the Padres could still easily have won. Aren't the fans there to try to see their team win the game? It's not like it was 8-0 or something, then he might have had a point.

Well, at least we all agree on something.

I mean, Brenly wasn't that great was a ball player, I didn't like him as a TV guy... and I don't think he's a great manager either.

man, i was hoping to have an argument on this topic

anyways, yeah it seems that if a guy got a perfect game while the opposing team wasn't even trying to do well...then it would be almost bittersweet, u know?

one argument i heard against ben davis was that since ben davis isnt exactly a bunter (i dont think hed bunted all season prior), and he bunted specifically in that situation, that that made it wrong to do...what do u guys feel about this? i still think benny d. was tryin his best to catch arizona off guard and bring the tyin run to the plate...

Personally, I very much so doubt that Ben Davis made this call, in fact, he couldn't have. The Padres manager made this call to try to catch him off balance, so to blame Benny for anything is crazy.

Now, from what you said, no there is nothing wrong with him bunting. I mean... the art of suprise is part of the game. Everything Brenly criticized is PART OF THE GAME. So... the guy is a moron.

It was actually a very good bunt, and blooped nicely into the infield, and he made it to 1st base easily!! I wish more guys could bunt like that!!
