The cycle is a good acomplishment, but I think too much is made of it. I mean, if someone is a single shy of the cycle, hits a ball into the gap, and stretches it out to a double, he doesnt get the cycle! Oh well...congrats to Biggio anyways

Yeah I agree. If you go by total bases a cycle equals 10 bases (you know a homer = 4 bases, a single = 1 base, etc.).

So if you hit 2 homers and get two doubles in a game that's 12 bases. I'd rather have that than the cycle.

I think people like "the cycle" and hitters get more notoriety from it because it's like a nice round number. It's like, "Wow, you did everything, a single, double, triple and a homer".

The cycle is a nice tribute to an all-around player, because in general, you need to be able to consistenly hit for average (to get the 4 hits), have speed (to get the triple), and have power (to get the HR).

Though you are right, Id rather have the 2 homers and the 2 doubles.

The cycle is one of those "interesting" accomplishments and not so much a measuring accomplishment, anyone can get it and anyone has. It mostly takes luck because any ball player on the major league level is good enough to hit for the cycle, just have to have a good night really.

Good way to put it Wedge. I was reading a Stephen King book and he mentioned that the Cycle in baseball:

"is less of a feat and more of a statistical oddity."

That about sums it up.
