I oftne hear the debate about which american sport is the real pastime of the usa. The debate is usually between nfl and baseball.

However with basketball and soccer being the most played sports, nfl being the most watched how can baseball claim to still be the national pastime of the usa?

Personally I believ there is no actual national pastime. Different sports are popular with different sections at different time sof the eyar. There is no national sport.

In other parts of the world you can state which sport is the nationa psort but I feel in the usa there is no national pastime.

Discuss.

That is a good point. Things are so diversified here in the States that it is tough to decide which you would call the national pastime.

If you were judging by revenues, I think the NFL might have everyone beat, and NASCAR would be up there, too.

However, baseball is kind of special. You can go to a game, and just spend the day there, relaxing. You know that there will be times when your team will win and lose, and you can just take it in, relax, enjoy the weather, and the game. It is hard to say that with so many other sports. Like with football, when I watch it, I pretty much zone out everything else around me. Perhaps there are baseball people like that, as well.

Just my thoughts.

Baseball is just so unique and well... American!

The way it's played, with the defense controlling the ball, and the intense hustling and adrenaline rush during plays and then the tension and lull afterwards. It's truly a beautiful thing.

And basketball is only the most played because of its lack of equipment requirements and versatility: you can play 1vs1 or even practice by yourself.
Because of that, it's probably the most played not just here, but in the world

Baseball is definately HUGE but Football (our version) is only played here compared to Baseball which is international. So the USA's sport has got to be football because its only played here.
